#Do you practice policy as a leader?
Dear #CEO
When do you practice policy, expediency and morality as a leader !
Policy is practiced when there is a policy in place for example in SQDC. You always go with policy starting with safety in situations you find at work.
Policy would be to negotiate a given situation with a union, a political party or as we have seen with world leaders.
Expediency is used when there is no policy or the policy has been exhausted and we need to now engage our experience, wisdom and skills in sorting out a problem at work, or on the world stage, for example when trying to broker a peace deal.
Morality is something most lacking in leaders today. Its so lacking its unfashionable even to use it. People shy away from it.
We engage morality when Policy and Expediency has been exhausted or/and we know this is the right thing to do. It might cost us our job, but not our soul . Morality is when you know or just feel this is the right thing to do, to secure freedom for example. Or you see behaviour at work which is unethical, dangerous, immoral, criminal, it chides with your values . It is when we need to support others who are fighting their or our cause. Because that is what you must do.
Many leaders, from business to leaders of countries, I could mention at least two in Europe, but I won’t, lack morality.
You need to judge a situation and know when to engage PEM.
Lost are those leaders who never reach M – Morality. They have no moral spine, are so ego driven they decide policy on what is most lucrative, what secures them power, ego , money and esteem .
If you want to be a free person in your work, do what is morally right, even if it might not be expedient.
Do not remain impartial, have moral courage.
“A man does what he must – in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures – and that is the basis of all human morality.”
Winston Churchill
